Jumping Through a Hoop

I was cleaning out some of my kids toys, and found an old hoola-hoop. I thought it would be fun to see if I could get my dog to jump through it. I was totally suprized at just how easy the dog learned this trick.

Teach your dog to jump through a hoop

First get a hoop. A hoola-hoop (the toy) is a good cheap starter hoop. A handful of bite-size dog treats will keep your dog motivated during the training.

Have your dog sit. Place the hoop infront of her. Hold the treat on the other side of the hoop and have her go through the hoop to get the treat. Give a verbal command you will use for this trick such as "Jump" or "Hoop" at the same time. When she goes through the hoop to get her treat, give her praise.

Now have her comeback the other way through the hoop again with your treat as the bait. Do this a few times until your dog is totally comfortable with the action.

Now raise the hoop up a few inches off the floor. And raise the treat you are holding on the other side a little higher as well. Give the "Jump" command. Your dog might jump right through the hoop or step over the hoop one paw at a time. Either way, give praise, the treat and repeat till they are comfortable with a hoop being slightly off the ground.

Keep the process going, raising the hoop and the treat higher and higher off the ground until your dog is jumping through the hoop for her treat, and eventually jumping only by the verbal command.

This trick is so much fun... and it's a great for hyper dogs and 'jumpers'.
