Lay Down
This trick works much like the "sit" command, and is the starting point for more advanced tricks like rolling over, crawling, and playing dead.
How to teach your dog to lay down
Standing next to your dog. Give the command to "lay down". You can also make a down ward motion with your hand at the same time. If your dog already knows how to sit, they will probably do so. Either way, gently push down on the top of your dog's neck and hindquarters and put them into the laying down position. Give praise. Repeat.
Another way is to hold a small treat in your hand, and as you say "Lay Down", hold the treat in front of their nose and bring it down to the ground. If they aren't completely laying down at this point, go ahead and help them with your other hand. Give praise and the treat. Repeat.
